Ethics and Social Media Research conference - Call for papers extended to 18th January

The deadline for the call for papers for our Ethics and Social Media Research conference has been extended to Monday 18th January 2016.

Date: Monday 21st of March, 2016

The Academy of Social Sciences and NSMNSS network are inviting abstracts for full papers or posters/videos from those whose research makes use of social media, around the following four themes: 
  • Ethics & Practicalities: Consent in social media research.
  • Privacy, ownership and legal dimensions: The use of social media data for research.
  • Blurred lines: Relationships between researchers and participants in social media research.
  • Critical ethical reflections: Improving ethical practice.
250 word abstracts should be submitted on this form and sent to acss.ethics@gmail.com. There will be a £100 prize for the best poster/ video as well as a number of discounted places and travel bursaries for postgraduate students. Following the conference we aim to produce an e-book of the presented papers.

Facebook as a Tool for Research

Gill Mooney is a doctoral researcher, studying at the University of Leeds. Her research interests are currently focused on social class and social media. D-day minus 4 at #bookofblogs HQ

It's been a whirlwind summer, full of sport, sunshine, a bit of rain (at least here in the UK) and I hope you've had some memorable holidays... In amongst all that something pretty special has been happening at the #bookofblogs HQ. Over the last nine weeks researchers, practitioners, academics and bloggers have been penning their thoughts on the use of social media for research and sharing them with us. Back in June when I wrote sometimes you have to 'just do it'  and lobbed the idea of a crowd-sourced book of blogs into the Twittersphere, it wasn't without a fair bit of trepidation. Would anyone respond? What would people write about? Would we reach beyond existing bloggers and network members. You know what, people (yes that's you!) really did respond .
